Present Participle

Present Participle:

The Present Participle. It ends in -ing. (Verb + ing.). It represents an action which is incomplete or is going on. It is also called the Active Participle.

  • Running water is not always fit for drinking.
  • The Gerund and the present Participle have the same form. But whereas the gerund acts like a noun, the present participle acts like an adjective.

    The Present Participle is Used:

  • as an adjective:
  • A rolling pebble gathers no mass.
  • This is an interesting story.
  • as a subject complement:
  • The dog went barking.
  • This book is very interesting.
  • as an object complement:
  • I saw him entering the house.
  • He left the tap running.
  • as an absolute phrase:
  • It being a rainy day, we kept indoors.
  • The teacher being on leave, the students had a good time.
  • to form the continuous tenses.
  • He is playing cricket.
  • You have been waiting for a long time.
  • to express an action, when two actions by the same subject occur simultaneously.
  • He walked away whistling.
  • The boy came crying.
